4th of July dud!
We have a tradition in our family to go down to the Henry Ford Greenfield Village Fireworks show. It is really fun. The DSO plays beautiful music and the Chef's make fried chicken. Sanders is there with their wonderful cream puffs. We meet my aunt and cousin down there. We have learned from past experience that people are crazy and will do anything to get to the open field first to claim their spot. The first couple of years we would be power walking down to the field with the rest of the idiots. Now we send Rob and Jeremy with 2 chairs and a blanket while the girls take their time walking down there with the cooler and other chairs in a wagon. This year was no different. We arrived to 90 + degrees, 100 % humidity and blue skies. We got settled in at about 6:30 and picked up our chicken dinner while we waited for the music to start at 7:00. At about 7:30 a lady came on the stage and said that everyone needed to seek shelter. They were going to open several buildings but there would not be enough room for everyone so if you could make it to your car please do that. Well, before we could get our chairs folded it started to rain buckets. I had 3 rain coats, my aunt had 1 and a big umbrella. The boys agreed to let the girls have the rain coats and we all huddled together. Let's say that I wish we would have tried to make it to shelter. The rain was coming down so hard and the wind was about 65 mph and then the hail started. Rob took his shirt off and wrung out a cup of water. It was not pleasant! So, at 8:30 we made the decision to go home. It took us 15 minutes to walk back to our car and it took my mom and Rob about 30 minutes. When we left at 9:00 the Henry Ford still had not made a decision about if they were going to have a show or not. About 5 minutes down the road the sky turned green and we were afraid that a tornado was on the way. I think what makes me mad is that we paid money to go to this event and they have a no rain check policy. It's not like we didn't try to hang in there. I am calling them in the morning to complain.
